Transitioning to a Raw Diet

When transitioning over to a raw diet there are several ways to do it. We recommend feeding one protein source at a time for one week increments. This way you can see which meats work best for your dog and which ones are his/her favorites. This is also an excellent way for you to monitor your dog if they have any allergy issues. When what you are feeding is very plain and simple, its much easier to decide what things are causing the allergies. After your dog has enjoyed each of our different varieties one at a time, you can rotate the flavors that work everyday or every few days as you want.

Most young healthy dogs, and dogs that handle dietary changes well, will transition smoothly to a new raw food diet overnight.

For older dogs, or dogs who in the past have experienced mild digestive upsets easily, may benefit from a more gradual transition of 7-10 days. You want to phase out the old diet while mixing in the new raw food, gradually reducing the quantity of the old food and increasing the new until your dog is eating only the raw.

A third option that is very successful is splitting the dogs daily food intake into two feedings. The AM feeding - a reduced amount of the old diet. The PM feeding - an increasing amount of the new raw foods, until the AM kibble is completely phased out. If you wish to continue with two feeding per day, just make the AM feeding eventually all raw also.

We recommend the addition of digestive enzymes during the transition period. You can find these at
b-naturals or Natures Farmacy.
